France will take on defending champions China in the title match.
France scripted a historic chapter in badminton on Saturday, defeating India 3-0 in the Thomas Cup 2026 semi-finals to book a maiden appearance in the tournament’s final.
The tie was defined by clinical French singles play and, crucially, a devastating injury blow that robbed India of their best weapon before the contest even began.
In the first match of the tie, World No. 4 Christo Popov gave India’s Ayush Shetty (WR 18) no chances. The Frenchman raced to an 11-2 lead in the second game after taking the first 21-11, finishing off the match in a dominant 21-11, 21-9 scoreline in just 39 minutes.
Shetty was pushed straight into a tough spot against one of the world’s best, and you could see he never really settled. Popov stayed sharp and in control throughout, giving France a quick 1–0 lead.

Kidambi Srikanth fights but falls short
Kidambi Srikanth (WR 30) provided more resistance against world No. 10 Alex Lanier, trailing only 11-7 in the opening game before it slipped away 21-16.
The second game went down to the wire, Srikanth was just a point behind at 15-16 before nerves got the better of him, ultimately going down 21-18 in 41 minutes.
HS Prannoy goes down fighting
HS Prannoy (WR 35) probably gave India their best showing of the tie against Toma Junior Popov (WR 17). He controlled large parts of the opening game, but Popov kept hanging in, closing the gap to just a point at the break before sneaking through 21–19.
The second game was more straightforward for the Frenchman, who held his lead throughout to win 21-16 in 48 minutes. The tie was sealed; the doubles pairs never took the court.
Lakshya Sen’s absence was felt right from the start. India’s top singles player had to pull out after hurting his elbow in the quarter-final against Chou Tien Chen, and that left a big gap.
The team was suddenly relying on an untested lineup at the top, and never really got the chance to bring in their strongest weapon, their doubles pairs, including the world No. 4 duo of Satwik and Chirag.
France enter the history books
France became only the second European nation after Denmark to reach a Thomas Cup final, and they did it without dropping a single game against the 2022 champions.
Earlier this year, they also claimed their first-ever European Men’s Team Badminton Championship, defeating Denmark in that final too. It has been a remarkable year for French badminton.
They now face an altogether different challenge, 11-time champions China, who beat Denmark in the other semifinal. The final takes place tomorrow.
