Sindhu lost to Wang Zhi Yi in three games.
PV Sindhu’s search for a first BWF title in 2024 extended further as she suffered a three-game loss against China’s Wang Zhi Yi in the final of the Malaysia Masters 2024 badminton tournament on Sunday.
Sindhu, who won her last BWF title at the Singapore Open in 2022 after beating the same opponent, found herself in the lead after taking the first game but the World No. #7 Chinese fought back to ultimately clinch the match.
The final scoreline was 16-21, 21-5, 21-16 in Wang’s favour after 79 minutes. It was another final loss on the BWF World Tour for Sindhu.
PV Sindhu started strongly in the first game, leading 11-9 at the interval and then extending her advantage to 15-9 before closing out the game. Wang dominated the second game to level the match.
In the deciding third game, Sindhu looked in control when she led 11-3 at the interval. But Wang incredibly won 18 of the last 23 points to seal an improbable comeback victory.
The 28-year-old Indian had reached the final with a hard-fought three-game win over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in Saturday’s semifinals.
While the final didn’t go the way that India’s number one shuttler would have liked, Sindhu still has shown glimpses of returning to some kind of form, beating players like Kirsty Gilmour, Sim Ya Jin, and Han Yueen route the final at Kuala Lumpur.
Sindhu’s strong run in Malaysia will boost her confidence. The upcoming Singapore Open also augur well for the double Olympic medalist heading into the Paris Olympics in July-August.
