PV Sindhu is India’s most successful shuttler at the Olympics.

Badminton made its official Olympic debut in 1992 after being featured as a demonstration sport in 1972 and an exhibition sport in 1988. Since then, the Olympic badminton events have included men’s and women’s singles and doubles, with mixed doubles added in 1996. The qualification process for the world’s most prestigious event is based on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings.

Gao Ling holds the record for the most Olympic badminton medals, with two gold, one silver and one bronze. Other notable players include Fu Haifeng, Zhang Nan, Zhao Yun Lei and Kim Dong-moon, each with two gold and one bronze.

The 2000 Sydney Olympics witnessed China sweep the women’s doubles and in 2012, China became the first country to win gold in all five badminton disciplines at a single edition. Indonesia have also won gold in all disciplines, but at different editions of the Olympics.

As of Paris Olympics 2024*, China stand as the most successful nation in the sport with a total of 48 medals, including 24 coming from women’s events. Indonesia and South Korea follow, with 21 medals each. Notably, badminton remains one of the few disciplines in which the USA are yet to win a medal in Olympic history.

Saina Nehwal won India’s first medal in badminton at the London Olympics in 2012. She won the bronze medal and four years down the line; PV Sindhu became the first Indian shuttler to reach an Olympic final. She won the silver medal and at Tokyo 2020 it was a bronze medal. She is the first Indian shuttler to win multiple Olympic medals.
