Japan Open 2025: All you need to know about prize money & points on offer

The total prize pool of the Japan Open 2025 is USD 950,000.

The 42nd edition of the BWF Japan Open is being played from July 15 to July 20 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. The first-round matches were played on the first two days, while further round matches began on July 17.

Since this is a BWF Super 750 event, the biggest names in the world badminton circuit are currently participating in the tournament. The top five players in the BWF rankings in all sections, barring the mixed doubles event, are all part of the draw.

The likes of Kunlavut Vitidsarn, Shi Yuqi, Anders Antonsen, Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning, Baek Ha-na/Lee So-hee, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai, and Jiang Zhenbang/Wei Yaxin are all vying for a top-of-the-podium finish in their respective categories.

It appears that the Indian contingent is not at full strength. The men’s singles event features Olympian Lakshya Sen. In contrast, HS Prannoy has withdrawn from the tournament, and Srikanth Kidambi, who reached the finals of the Canada Open earlier this month, is not participating.

However, five Indians are in reserve, namely Priyanshu Rajawat, Ayush Shetty, Kiran George, S. Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, and Meiraba Luwang Maisnam. Ayush Shetty won the US Open last month and has registered his name in the history of the BWF World Tour.

PV Sindhu will lead India’s campaign along with Anupama Upadhyaya and Unnati Hooda. Malvika Bansod has withdrawn from the tournament.

Much to the joy of fans around the world, the tournament sees the return of arguably India’s finest doubles pairing ever, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. They will be eyeing their first title of the year at the Japan Open 2025. However, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, India’s top doubles duo, have withdrawn.

The pairing of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto led the Indian challenge in the mixed doubles section, with the draw also featuring Rohan Kapoor/Ruthvika Shivani Gadde.
