As a Super 750 event on the BWF World Tour, the tournament attracts many of the world’s top shuttlers competing for prestigious titles and valuable ranking points during the Asian leg of the season.
Defending champions Shi Yuqi and An Se Young lead a star-studded field, while home favourite Akane Yamaguchi will be aiming to make history by winning a record fifth Japan Open title in front of her passionate supporters.
India endured mixed fortunes on the opening day of the tournament. PV Sindhu made a winning start with a straight-games victory over Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching.
Moreover, top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made a heartbreaking exit in the first round when Satwik aggravated his recurring shoulder injury and was forced to retire midway through the match. The tournament threw up some major upsets as the week progressed.
Both top seeds fell in the quarterfinals, with defending champion Shi Yuqi going down to World Tour Finals champion Christo Popov in three games, while second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn was stunned by home favourite Yushi Tanaka, also in a three-game battle.
The results opened up the draw significantly heading into the business end of the tournament. Sindhu’s run continued to gather momentum as she advanced to the semifinals following Nozomi Okuhara’s withdrawal, giving the Indian a walkover into the final four and keeping her campaign alive deep into the tournament.
With significant prize money and crucial ranking points on offer, players across all categories will be looking to make deep runs as they build momentum heading into the second half of the 2026 season.
