Will Thomas and Uber Cup 2026 offer prize money?

France will make a maiden final appearance at Thomas Cups.

The Thomas and Uber Cup 2026 are well and truly alive with drama. Held in Horsens, Denmark, the tournament started on 24 April with the finals scheduled to take place on 3rd May.

India, champions in 2022, crashed out in the semi-finals after a humbling defeat to France—who have advanced to their first-ever final. France will face defending champions and 11-time winners China in the title match.

China saw-off hosts Denmark in the other semi-final to enter the title match at Thomas Cup for the 15th time.

Meanwhile, it is China again who are in the Uber Cup final, and they take on South Korea. This is the seventh time both nations will meet in the title match in the competition history.

Does Thomas and Uber Cup offer prize money?

No, the Thomas and Uber Cup does not offer any official prize money. As a Grade 1 BWF Major Event, the Badminton World Federation does not distribute direct cash awards to players or teams for winning or participating.

This has been the consistent stance since the tournament’s inception—the Thomas Cup dating back to 1948, and the Uber Cup to 1956.

The focus of both events has always been on national pride, collective glory, and the honour of representing one’s country on the world stage. No financial prize has been announced by the BWF for the 2026 edition in Horsens, Denmark, either.

Why is it so important then?

Despite the absence of prize money, the Thomas and Uber Cup remain two of the most coveted titles in world badminton. For players, lifting the trophy means something no individual tournament can offer: the pride of winning for your nation.

The Thomas Cup is named after Sir George Thomas, and the Uber Cup after Betty Uber, with both competitions aiming to determine the best national teams in men’s and women’s badminton, respectively.

Indonesia are the most successful nation in Thomas Cup history with 14 titles, while China dominate the Uber Cup. Legends from Lin Dan and Taufik Hidayat to Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin have all written iconic chapters at this tournament.

For India, the Thomas Cup holds especially deep meaning. Their 2022 triumph ended a 73-year wait and was celebrated as one of the greatest moments in Indian sporting history. The current squad with Lakshya, Satwik-Chirag, and a rising Ayush Shetty, are now chasing a second title.

What about national incentives?

While the BWF offers no prize money, national federations and governments often step in with their own rewards. After India’s 2022 Thomas Cup victory, the Badminton Association of India announced cash prizes for the entire contingent.

State governments, too, have historically rewarded their athletes with bonuses and felicitations. However, these are not standardised and depend entirely on individual associations.

How does it differ from other BWF events?

Most individual events on the BWF World Tour offer substantial prize money. Tournaments like the Indonesia Open, All England Open, and the BWF World Tour Finals carry prize pools ranging from $140,000 to over $2 million. These are individual competitions where players compete for personal titles and financial reward.

The Thomas, Uber, and Sudirman Cups operate on an entirely different philosophy. They are team championships built on national representation, heritage, and collective achievement, aspects that continue to draw the world’s biggest stars year after year, regardless of financial reward.

Where and when is Thomas and Uber Cup 2026 taking place?

The event is taking place in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3.

Will the Thomas and Uber Cup 2026 offer any prize money?

No, the Thomas & Uber Cups doesn’t offer any prize money officially since its inception.

Why are the Thomas and Uber Cup an important tournament in badminton calendar?

It is one of the two premier team championships in badminton, where players compete for national pride rather than individual titles. The competition’s rich history, prestige, and rare biennial format make them among the most valued trophies in the sport.
