PV Sindhu's projected path to Badminton Asia Championships 2025 final

PV Sindhu will start her campaign against Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo.

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has had a tough 2025 season. Apart from reaching the quarterfinals at the India Open, she has struggled with early exits and injuries.

After a quarterfinal loss to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung (9-21, 21-19, 17-21) at her home tournament, Sindhu lost in the first round of the next three events. PV Sindhu was also forced to withdraw from the Asian Mixed Team Championships due to a hamstring injury. She played with heavy strapping and lost to Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen (17-21, 19-21) at the Swiss Open.

Sindhu started strongly at the prestigious All England Open but lost to Korea’s Kim Ga Eun (21-19, 13-21, 13-21). At the Indonesia Masters, she suffered a disappointing loss to Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen (20-22, 12-21). Despite leading 20-14 in the first game, she lost eight consecutive points and struggled in the second game.

Her best performance so far was at the India Open, where she defeated Sung Shuo Yun (21-14, 22-20) and Manami Szu (21-15, 21-13) before falling in the quarterfinals.

Sindhu will now look to bounce back at the Asian Championships. She faces Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo of Indonesia in the first round. If she wins, she will likely face Akane Yamaguchi in the second round, followed by a possible quarterfinal against Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei and a semifinal clash with Wang Zhi Yi.

Round 1 – Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo

PV Sindhu will start her campaign against Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo of Indonesia. This will be the first meeting between the two. Ester’s career highest ranking was 22 and her current ranking is 33. She won one title in 2023 and finished as the runner-up of the Australian Open 2024 (Super 500).

She played a key role in helping her team win the silver medal in the 2024 Uber Cup. She will be a tricky opponent for PV Sindhu and we can expect a great clash between them

Round 2 – Akane Yamaguchi

Sindhu’s potential second-round opponent will be her old rival Akane Yamaguchi. Although Sindhu enjoys a 14-11 head-to-head against Akane she has lost the last two matches against her. If they would meet in the second round this would be their first meeting in the last two years. Sindhu generally likes to play against Akane and has defeated her many times but going with the current form, it will be tough for Sindhu to win against Akane Yamaguchi.

Quarterfinal – Chen Yu Fei

Her possible Quarterfinal opponent will be Tokyo Olympic Champion Chen Yu Fei. The head-to-head stands equal at 6-6. Sindhu however lost her last three matches against her. Chen Yu Fei has done well since her comeback after the Pairs failure and she has won all her matches except the two losses which came against An Se-young.

Chen Yu Fei needs to beat Pornpawee Chochuwong in the second round of the Asian Championships to seal her quarterfinal spot.

Semifinal – Wang Zhi Yi/Ratchanok Intanon

Her possible semifinal opponent will be either another Chinese player Wang Zhi Yi or her best friend Ratchanok Intanon. Currently ranked world no 2 Wang Zhi Yi will look to reach the semifinals of the Badminton Asia Championships 2025. She has a decent path to reach the semifinal. The only threat will be Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand whom she will face in the quarterfinal.

Wang Zhi Yi has just won one match in the six meetings against Intanon. However, the recent form of Ratchanok Intanon is a concern, so it will be an interesting matchup between the two to decide who will reach the semifinal.

Final – Tomoka Miyazaki/Han Yue/Gregoria Mariska Tunjung

The final clash could be between any of the three players, Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki, China’s Han Yue, and Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. All three players can reach the finals and defeat the other two players. So it will be interesting to see who among these three will reach the finals.

Japanese young talent Tomoka Miyazaki who is currently WR 7 and just 18 years old, will be one of the favorites to reach the final. However, she will have a tricky match against Tunjung of Indonesia who is WR 5 in the QF. The winner of these two will face China’s Han Yue in the semifinals.
