Satwik-Chirag will eye a second Asian Games gold
India’s reigning Asian Games men’s doubles champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, currently ranked World No. 5, will begin their title defence in the men’s doubles event at Asian Games 2026 on Friday.
The Indian pair will be aiming to retain the gold medal they won in Hangzhou in 2023.
The draw has given the world-class Indian duo a challenging route, with several leading pairs potentially standing between them and another gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya.

Satwik-Chirag will begin their campaign against Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeratsakul, who are currently ranked world No. 36.
Although the Indians lead their head-to-head 2-0, both previous meetings went the distance. The two pairs have not met in 2026, adding an element of uncertainty to the opening-round contest.
The Thai pair also arrive in good form after defeating a world No. 15 combination in the team event. Satwik and Chirag will therefore need to be sharp from the beginning.
R16 – Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin (Indonesia)
A potential round-of-16 clash could see the Indians face Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, currently ranked world No. 32.
Satwik-Chirag have won four of their five meetings against the Indonesian pair. However, their most recent encounter ended in defeat, with Carnando and Marthin beating the Indians in the final of the Thailand Open in May.
The result will give the Indonesians confidence heading into another meeting, while Satwik and Chirag will be looking to make amends and progress to the quarterfinals.

Quarter-final – Nguyen Dinh Hoang/Tran Dinh Manh (Vietnam)
Their projected quarter-final opponent is Vietnam’s Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Manh.
The Vietnamese pair are ranked 107th in the world and are not an established combination at the same level as the other potential opponents in Satwik-Chirag’s half of the draw. On paper, this should be a more comfortable quarter-final for the Indians.
Semi-final – Kim Won Ho/Seo Seung Jae (South Korea)
The semi-final could bring the biggest challenge of Satwik-Chirag’s campaign so far, with a potential clash against world No. 1 Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea.
The Korean pair lead their head-to-head 2-1, but Satwik and Chirag won their most recent meeting in the semi-finals of the Singapore Open.
Kim and Seo’s ranking and consistency make them a formidable obstacle. However, the Indians will take confidence from their latest victory and will know they have already shown they can defeat the Korean combination. A win would send Satwik-Chirag into another Asian Games men’s doubles final.
Final – Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri (Indonesia) or Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang (China)
The final could feature either Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri or China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang.
Against the Indonesian pair, Satwik-Chirag’s head-to-head record is tied at 2-2. However, the Indians won their latest meeting in a thrilling three-game Singapore Open final, giving them confidence if the two pairs meet again.
The Chinese pair present an equally difficult challenge. Liang and Wang lead the head-to-head 10-5, although Satwik and Chirag won their most recent meeting in straight games in the Asian Games team event.
The route to gold is therefore not simple. As the reigning champions, Satwik and Chirag will be aiming to navigate this difficult draw and successfully defend their Asian Games men’s doubles gold medal.
