Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth are the only other Indians to be ranked WR #1.
Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have held their world no. 1 ranking for the 10th consecutive week, surpassing the previous Indian record held by Saina Nehwal.
In April 2015, Saina Nehwal made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the top spot in women’s badminton rankings. This feat came after her strong performance at the All England Open, where she reached the final but lost to Carolina Marín. Later that year, Nehwal’s success continued as she won her first women’s singles title at the India Open, defeating Ratchanok Intanon in the final.
For Satwik-Chirag, the milestone Asian Games success propelled them to the top of the world rankings on October 10, 2023.
Despite a brief displacement from the top spot by China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, the Indian duo reclaimed their position on January 23, 2024, following consistent performances at the Malaysia Open and India Open.
Their recent victory at the French Open Super 750, where they defeated Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan from Chinese Taipei 21-11, 21-17, marked their second French Open crown and reinforced their status as the world’s premier doubles team.

Earlier in the semi-final stage, Rankireddy and Shetty faced off against South Korea’s reigning world champions, Kang Minhyuk and Seo Seungjae. The Indian pair showcased their championship pedigree by dispatching the South Koreans in straight games, 21-13, 21-16, to book their spot in their third French Open final.
After the tournament, the Indian duo became the first men’s doubles pair to surpass the 100,000-point mark, setting a new record of 102,303 points.
