World No. 1 Shi Yuqi and reigning Olympic champion An Se-young headline the tournament

The BWF World Tour heads to Tokyo for one of the most prestigious events on the calendar, the BWF Japan Open 2026.

Classified as a Super 750 tournament, the event will feature many of the world’s leading shuttlers competing for crucial ranking points and a strong statement ahead of the season’s biggest championships.

China’s Shi Yuqi returns as the defending men’s singles champion and top seed, while South Korea’s An Se-young arrives as both the defending women’s singles champion and the tournament’s top seed.

The event also features reigning world-class doubles combinations, including Kim Won-ho/Seo Seung-jae, Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning and Jiang Zhenbang/Wei Yaxin, all of whom are defending champions in their respective categories.

India’s challenge will be led by Lakshya Sen and rising star Ayush Shetty in men’s singles, while PV Sindhu and Unnati Hooda will compete in women’s singles.

In men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty enter as the third seeds and among the favourites for the title.

As a Super 750 event, the Japan Open offers significant world ranking points and is expected to provide a strong indication of form as players continue their preparations for the major events later in the season.
