Lee Zii Jia will remain absent with injury for Malaysia.
The Sudirman Cup 2025 is set to feature some of the best badminton talents from across the world, and Malaysia has officially announced its squad for the 19th edition of the prestigious mixed team championship.
Malaysia has named a 20-member squad for the tournament, set to take place in Xiamen, China, from April 27 to May 4. However, one of the biggest talking points is the absence of Lee Zii Jia, Malaysia’s top-ranked men’s singles player.

The former All England Champion represented Malaysia in the 2023 Sudirman Cup and won all five of his matches, proving his importance in the team events. The Paris Olympics bronze medallist has secured a protected ranking from the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which requires him to take a mandatory three-month break from competition. As a result, he will not be part of the Malaysian team for this tournament.
In his absence, the men’s singles duties will be taken over by Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh. Leong, ranked 26th in the world, brings valuable experience, while the 21-year-old Justin, ranked 48th, will be making his Sudirman Cup debut.
In women’s singles, Malaysia will rely on the experienced Goh Jin Wei and the young Letshanaa Karupathevan. Goh, a two-time World Junior Champion, will be one of the key players to watch.
Malaysia’s squad includes strong doubles pairs across categories, with world number two duo Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin leading the men’s doubles, and Pearly Tan & Thinaah Muralitharan spearheading the women’s doubles campaign.
Pearly and Thinaah skipped the Badminton Asia Championships this month to allow Pearly to recover from injury and focus on the Sudirman Cup.
In the mixed doubles, experienced pair Goh Soon Huat & Shevon Jemie Lai, alongside Chen Tang Jie & Toh Ee Wei, will be key contenders.
