Defending champions China are favourites to successfully retain the title.

BWF Sudirman Cup 2025 is the 19th edition of the event, which is a biennial international badminton championship contested by the mixed national teams of the member associations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) since its inception in 1989. The 2025 edition of the tournament will be held in Xiamen, China, between April 27 and May 4.

A total of 16 teams will participate in the tournament finals in Xiamen. Here’s a list of the top five title favourites at Sudirman Cup 2025.

Malaysia

Former world champion Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik takes the charge for team Malaysia, who are depleted without the presence of their best men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia. Rusty but steady Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan spearhead women’s doubles and Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei are Malay’s best bet for mixed doubles.

If they can upset Japan in the group stages and then follow up that performance in the quarters, Malaysia can be in the final four at Xiamen 2025.

Indonesia

Former All England Champion Jonatan Christie spearheads team Indonesia. The team’s strength as always is the doubles pairs. The team will definitely miss their best women’s singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. Apart from that they have fielded decent squad, favourites to win a medal.

Japan

Two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi features in the strong Japanese squad. The contingent features huge dept in women’s doubles sector with Nami Matsuyama, Chiharu Shida, Mayu Matsumoto, Arisa Igarashi. Kodai Naraoka takes the men’s singles charge and Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi makes a comeback. A well-balanced squad, definitely medal favourites.

South Korea

World’s current best player An Se Young leads team South Korea to Xiamen 2025. The team features top players in doubles sector including the former world champions Seo Seung-jae, Chae Yu-jung and Kim Won Ho alongside Se Young. Former Olympic medalists Jeong Na Eun, Kong Hee Yong and Lee So Hee features with their partners Kim Won Ho and Baek Ha na.

Their special ability to create a scratch pairing out of the thin air remains their prime strength. The doubles starred squad with An Se Young are one of the top two favourites to win this year’s Sudirman Cup.

China

The defending champions are the favourites to bag their 14th title. The contingent features the top shuttlers of the the nation including several Olympic and world champions. The team features World No #1 Shi Yuqi, mixed doubles pair of Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin, along with women’s doubles pair of Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning.

The women’s singles is spearhead by World No #2 Wang Zhi Yi. The star-studded team has fielded their best names to defend their title at their home ground Xiamen.
