Young men’s singles impress, but established stars fall short in Basel
The third day of the BWF Swiss Open 2024 was a mixed bag for India, marked by numerous unexpected outcomes, yet there were still some bright spots to be found.
The women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the quarterfinals. They secured a straight-game victory over fellow Indians, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra. 2022 Syed Modi International runners-up and Commonwealth Games bronze medallists dominated the match, winning 21-10, 21-12 in a swift 36 minutes.
However, the day was not without its disappointments in Women’s doubles. India’s no 1 doubles pair Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa faced a setback against Japan’s world No. 30 pair, Rui Hirokami and Yuna Kato, with a score of 17-21, 16-21.
In the men’s singles, Priyanshu Rajawat made his mark by defeating Chinese player Lan Xi Lei 21-14, 21-13 in 38 minutes. He will now face World No. 15 from Chinese Taipei, Chou Tien Jien Chen, in the quarterfinals. Another young talent, Kiran George, also advanced to the quarterfinals after a grueling three-set match against France’s Alex Lanier, which lasted 71 minutes.
However some Stalwarts missed out on the Quarterfinals, Lakshya Sen, who has been performing exceptionally well at the French Open and All England Open, suffered a setback. He lost to LEE Chia Hao in straight games 17-21, 15-21.
