PV Sindhu is among the title contenders among others.
The Swiss Open is labelled a one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments across the word. The event has been held in Switzerland since 1955. In 2007, the competition was transformed into a BWF Super Series event, but in 2011, it was downgraded to a Grand Prix Gold event. As of 2023, it stands as a BWF Super 300 event, maintaining its significance in the BWF badminton calendar.
The Swiss Open 2024 is the ninth tournament of the 2024 BWF World Tour. The highly anticipated tournament will be played out at the St. Jakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland, from 19 to 24 March with a total prize of US$ 210,000.
Eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong will be in action to defend her title. She marks a comeback from her injury and would want to give a tough fight to Supanida Katethong to grab a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024. Former champion PV Sindhu will also in the fray for the title.
Title favourites in women’s singles at Swiss Open 2024
PV Sindhu
Is Basel PV Sindhu’s hunting ground? Because she really loves to play here! Her first world championship title came at this same venue as well. PV Sindhu has bagged the title earlier in 2022 and also registered a runner-up finish in 2021.
Keeping in mind the sheer form she has showcased till now post her comeback, the Indian is a favourite to have a long run at her favourite dining place.
Gregoria Mariska Tunjung
Gregoria reached the semi-final last year in her maiden Swiss Open appearance. Post that, she hasn’t looked back, and it has been an uphill road for the Indonesian hope. The second seed will face Wen Chi Hsu who is in fine touch of late. Gregoria will also aim to even her head-to-head records with the Taiwanese!
Beiwen Zhang
The 2023 semi-finalist Pan American marked her second semi-final appearance at Basel last year after 2019. She lost to Mia Blichfeldt in three games, to whom she lost in 2017 at the same place as well but in pre-quarters. There’s a chance they meet in the pre-quarters as well, Supanida might stop but who knows?
Aya Ohori
Aya Ohori’s heroics in 2023 need no introduction. She already won a Super 300 title this year in the form of Thailand Masters 2024. She also went out of her shell, gun blazing against PV Sindhu against whom she had an awful 0-13 record. But 14th time was her time at the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024. She has been handed with a decent draw as she has won the last two encounters against Busanan Ongbamrungphan.
Kim Ga Eun
The Korean No.2 won her maiden BWF tour title last year in her homeground at the Korea Masters Super 300 tournament. Since then, she has produced decent results. She also marked her maiden World Tour Finals last year. But to reach the title clash at Basel, Kim will have to overcome a giant of the sport in Carolina Marin, who is also coming off a successful title run at the All England Open.
