India is the defending Thomas Cup champions.
The Badminton World Federation recently unveiled the draws for the upcoming Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 tournaments in Chengdu, China. The Indian men’s team, reigning Thomas Cup champions, landed in Group C alongside Indonesia, a formidable opponent boasting 14 titles. Despite Indonesia’s history, India triumphed over them 3-0 in the 2022 final. Group C also features Thailand and England, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage. India secured their spot in the 2024 Thomas Cup as defending champions.
The hosts and 10-time winners China headline Group A, accompanied by two-time runners-up Republic of Korea, Canada, and Australia. In Group B, Japan, who clinched the title once in 2014, will compete against Chinese Taipei, Germany, and Czech Republic.
Seeded second, European powerhouses Denmark lead Group D, where they will face off against five-time champions Malaysia, Hong Kong China, and Algeria.
On the other hand, the Indian women’s team finds themselves in Group A of the 2024 Uber Cup alongside China, the top seeds and 15-time winners. India’s path also includes challenges from Canada and Singapore. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout phase, mirroring the Thomas Cup format. India’s women’s team earned their spot in the 2024 Uber Cup following their victory at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in February.
In Group B, Thailand, who were runners-up in 2018, will compete against Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, and Argentina. Group C features six-time champions Japan and three-time winners Indonesia, along with Hong Kong and debutants Uganda. Defending champions South Korea lead Group D, where they will face Denmark, USA, and Mexico.
In both the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 tournaments, the 16 participating teams are divided into four groups, with each group containing four teams. Within each group, teams will face off against each other in ties comprising five matches: three singles and two doubles. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
Both tournaments are scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 5 in Chengdu.
