Participation of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in the Thomas Cup gives a massive boost to the contingent and significantly strengthens India’s chances of retaining their title.
Last year, India joined an elite group of only six nations to have ever won the Thomas Cup, delivering a dominant performance against Indonesia, a 14-time winner, with a 3-0 victory in the final held in Bangkok. Victory was secured through the efforts of Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth in their singles matches, and the doubles team of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, marking a historic win for India in seven decades old tournament.
Earlier, Satwik-Chirag pulled out from the Badminton Asia Championships following Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s shoulder injury. The duo had clinched the gold medal at the 2023 Badminton Asia Championship, marking them as the first Indian doubles team to achieve this feat, and the second Indian overall since Dinesh Khanna’s victory in 1965 in Lucknow.
