Ayush’s title win was also the first by an Indian shuttler in the 2025 BWF season.

India’s second-highest ranked men’s singles player Ayush Shetty clinched his maiden BWF World Tour title with a dominant win at the US Open 2025, defeating third seed Brian Yang of Canada 21-18, 21-13 in the men’s singles final on Sunday. It wasn’t the same happy ending for compatriot Tanvi Sharma, who finished as runner-up after a hard-fought defeat against an experienced and top seed Beiwen Zhang.

Ayush, 20, from Karnataka capped off a sensational week, becoming the first Indian to win a World Tour title this season. Seeded fourth, Shetty stunned World No. #6 and top seed Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei in the semi-finals, his biggest win at the senior level so far.

This performance underlines Shetty’s rising stature in the international circuit, building on his consistent performances in recent months.

Shetty, who trains at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, showcased an impressive mix of composure and aggression, relying on his solid defense and deceptive smashes to outplay his opponents throughout the tournament.

In the women’s singles, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma created waves with one of the most memorable runs of the competition. Ranked World No. #66, she reached the final after defeating higher-ranked opponents including World Nos. 23, 40, 50, and 58 in a string of fearless performances.

Although she went down fighting to top seed Beiwen Zhang of the USA in a tightly contested three-game final (11-21, 21-16, 10-21), Tanvi made history by becoming the youngest Indian-ever to reach a BWF World Tour final.

A member of India’s victorious 2024 Asian Team Championships squad, Tanvi’s poise, tactical awareness, and variety stood out throughout the tournament. Her aggressive play and on-court maturity have earmarked her as one of the brightest young talents in Indian badminton.

With Shetty and Tanvi’s performances, India finished the tournament on a high, showcasing the promise of its next generation of shuttlers on the global stage.
