Indonesian shuttler, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, last participated in the Badminton Asia Championships in April.

Indonesian badminton star Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has been absent from major international tournaments for a couple of months, sparking concern among fans about her sudden disappearance from the competitive scene. The reason behind her hiatus is a serious health issue — severe vertigo and migraines.

Gregoria revealed her condition in an Instagram post, sharing that since late March, she has suffered intense vertigo attacks lasting 4 to 5 hours. During these episodes, she has experienced loss of balance, vomiting, and an inability to function normally. The unpredictable attacks have been challenging, requiring ambulance transport twice within a month.

Initially suspecting stress, she underwent brain and cervical MRI scans, which thankfully showed no serious abnormalities. However, doctors explained that diagnosing vertigo’s exact cause is complicated, as it can stem from many factors. She was advised to rest extensively and undergo further testing, alongside physiotherapy to improve her balance.

After some progress with physiotherapy, Gregoria resumed light training but had to pause again due to recurring symptoms. This ongoing battle forced her to withdraw from several tournaments, including the Sudirman Cup finals, where Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo replaced her.

Before her health issues emerged, Gregoria was in excellent form. In 2023, she made history by winning her first BWF World Tour title at the Spain Masters, defeating PV Sindhu and breaking into the world top 10 — the first Indonesian woman to do so in over a decade. She also claimed the Japan Masters title and finished runner-up at the Malaysia Masters.

In 2024, she was runner-up at the Swiss Open and Japan Masters and was part of Indonesia’s women’s team at the Uber Cup. The team reached the final for the first time since 2008, losing to China. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Gregoria won a remarkable bronze medal after a walkover by former champion Carolina Marin.

Despite this setback, Gregoria remains optimistic and committed to returning to the court. She continues rehabilitation and light training under medical supervision, determined to identify the root cause of her vertigo and regain full fitness.

Fans and the badminton community eagerly await her comeback and wish her a speedy recovery.
