The sporting community is engulfed with sadness after Diogo Jota’s untimely demise.

Portugal and Liverpool footballer, Diogo Jota tragically passed away in a car accident, at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday according to local authorities. The 28-year-old along with his brother, Andre Silva, a professional player for Portuguese side Penafiel, aged 25 were found dead after their car went off a road.

While the police are still investigating, they confirmed no involvement of any other vehicle in the incident. The tragic accident occurred on the A-52, a 400 km highway linking Madrid to Galicia in northwestern Spain, near the province of Zamora close to the Portuguese border.

Tributes poured all over social media, in remembrance of the young footballer. Several prominent figures from different professions mourned the passing away of the talented Portugese footballer.

LeBron James, a partner in Fenway Sports Group (owners of Liverpool FC) and NBA icon, paid tribute to Diogo Jota after the soccer star’s tragic death in a car accident in Spain. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), James wrote, “My prayers go out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!!” — referencing Liverpool’s motto, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Football legend Christiano Rolando offered his condolences, and said “To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them.” He added his shock and inability to understand what happened, given they were training together just a few days ago for the national team.

The former Atlético Madrid, Porto, and Wolves star scored nine goals across all competitions last season, helping Liverpool secure their 20th Premier League title. Capped 49 times by Portugal, Jota first moved to England in 2017 to join Wolves, and his impressive performances earned him a £45 million (€44.7 million) move to Liverpool in 2020.
