India are currently ranked third in Group E at the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers standings.
The Indian men’s basketball team are set to face Qatar in a crucial encounter in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers Window 3. This match holds immense significance for India, as a victory would secure them a spot in the next qualification round alongside Iraq, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei, keeping their Asia Cup hopes alive.
India enter this contest after a crushing 55-106 defeat against Iran in Tehran on February 21. Despite a good run in the first 10 minutes, where they competed 15-18 after the first quarter, the team struggled offensively, managing only five points late in the second quarter.
Foul trouble for key players like Pranav Prince and Muin Bek Hafeez further disrupted their rhythm, leading to an inconsistent second half where they could muster just 35 points. With a quick turnaround, India must regroup and deliver a much-improved performance against Qatar to stay in contention for qualification.
Preview
India
India, led by head coach Scott Flemming, will have him back on the sidelines for this match after missing the previous game due to personal reasons. The roster has a good presence of veterans Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, Joginder Singh Saharan and the leading scorer in the last game Amritpal Singh.
The squad boasts a dynamic group of young talents—a key focus for Flemming—including Harsh Dagar, Arvinder Singh Kahlon, Princepal Singh and Pranav Prince. The team also has perimeter snipers in Muin Bek Hafeez, Gurbaz Singh Sandhu and the Tamil Nadu duo of Arvind Kumar Muthukrishnan and Baladaneshwar Poyamozhi will add the defensive edge to the backcourt.
Qatar
The host team, coached by Hakan Demir, will start with a backcourt featuring Moustafa Fouda, Mike Lewis, Mahmoud Luay M Darwish, and Omar Saad. Their wing players include Tyler Harris, Faris Avdic, Mohammed Abbasher, Donte Grantham, and Babacar Dieng. In the frontcourt, they will rely on Ndoye Seydou, Moustapha Ndao, Bobo Magassa, and Alen Hadzibegovic.
Qatar’s game plan will focus on controlling the tempo, leveraging their physicality in the post, and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities through strong offensive rebounding.
Key matchups and tactical outlook
India’s defensive approach must focus on neutralizing Moustafa Fouda’s playmaking while also stopping the guard Mike Lewis and forward Tyler Harris, who are Qatar’s top scorers. Disciplined defensive rotations will be crucial to contest Qatar’s perimeter shooting and prevent open looks from beyond the arc.
Offensively, India will look to dictate the pace by pushing the ball in transition and creating mismatches in fast-break situations. The team will rely on Amritpal Singh’s dominance in the post while utilizing the perimeter versatility of players like Kanwar Sandhu and Muin Bek Hafeez to stretch Qatar’s defence.
Qatar, on the other hand, will attempt to slow the game down, forcing India into half-court sets where their defensive structure can be most effective. By controlling the tempo and leveraging their physical presence in the post, Qatar will aim to limit India’s transition opportunities and force contested shots.
What’s next? Can India still qualify?
A win for India will secure their place in the qualifying tournament, keeping their Asia Cup hopes alive. Even with a loss, they would remain in third place and still have a chance to compete in the qualification tournament. However, their final standing could be impacted by Kazakhstan’s performance against Iran, which will play a crucial role in determining the overall qualification picture.
For Qatar, a victory would further strengthen their momentum, as they have already secured qualification.
India face a pivotal challenge in their quest for Asia Cup qualification. If they fail to advance, it will mark their first absence from the tournament this century—the last time they missed out was in 1999 when the event was held in Japan. With history at stake, the team will be under immense pressure to deliver a strong performance and continue their long-standing presence in the competition.
