Tata Steel Chess 2025 will take place from January 18 to February 2.

The Tata Steel Chess is a tournament held annually in Wijk aan Zee. This is the 87th edition of the tournament in which 14 players will participate in the Masters category. The tournament holds major significance as it is one of the most prestigious chess tournaments in the world, first held in 1938.

For Indian Grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju, this will be his first tournament since he became the world champion. He defeated Ding Liren of China 7.5–6.5 and became the youngest world chess champion in history. Gukesh will face GM Anish Giri in his first match.

The world’s top players will participate in the tournament, including GMs Fabiano Caruana, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abusattorov, and defending champion Wei Yi. However, World Number 1 and five-time World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen will not be seen participating in the tournament.

Famous streamer and world number 3, Hikaru Nakamura from the United States will also miss the tournament. He has shifted his focus towards online formats, building his presence as a YouTuber and Twitch expert.

Tata Steel Chess 2025: Format

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament follows a 14-player round-robin format. Players receive 1 point for a win, half for a draw, and no points for a loss. If the scores of the players are tied after 14 matches, the winner is decided through a tiebreak.

The time control consists of 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment added per move starting from move one.
