Grandmasters Anand and Garry will reignite their rivalry for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Two of the most legendary and influential chess grandmasters in the history of the sport Viswanathan Anand and Garry Kasparov are set to renew their rivalry in Clutch Chess: The Legends tournament in Missouri, starting Wednesday, October 8.

Anand and Kasparov last met in a chess match at the 2021 Croatia Grand Chess Tour Rapid and Blitz event in Zagreb. Anand won both of their individual games in that tournament. 

However, this highly anticipated match marks their first extended encounter in 30 years, since their historic 1995 World Chess Championship clash.

The match will consist of 12 games of Chess960 also known as Fischer Random Chess. This format is designed to randomize the starting position of the pieces on the back rank to challenge players’ creativity rather than their memorization of opening theory.

Moreover, the Clutch Chess format is unique because the point and prize money values for winning a game increase each day, making it possible for a player to stage a dramatic comeback late in the match. For example:

• Day 1 (Oct 8): Win = 1 point, Draw = 0.5 points.
• Day 2 (Oct 9): Win = 2 points, Draw = 1 point.
• Day 3 (Oct 10): Win = 3 points, Draw = 1.5 points.

The total prize fund for the match is $144,000. The winner will receive $70,000 (approximately Rs 62 lakh) while the runner-up will take home $50,000 (approximately Rs 53 lakh).

In case of a tie after 12 games, each player will receive $60,000. An additional $24,000 bonus pool is also at stake. If games are drawn, their prize money will roll over, making the final games incredibly valuable. 

The match will feature two different time controls:

Rapid Games: Each player will have 25 minutes to make their moves, with an additional 10 seconds added to their clock after each move (G/25;+10). These are Games 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, and 10 of the match.

Blitz Games: Each player will have 5 minutes to make their moves, with an additional 3 seconds added to their clock after each move (G/5;+3). These are Games 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, and 12 of the match.

Oct 9, 2025 – Games 5-6 (Rapid) and 7-8 (Blitz) – 10:30 PM IST

Oct 10, 2025 – Games 9-10 (Rapid) and 11-12 (Blitz) – 10:30 PM IST
