All you need to know about Commonwealth Games 2026 medal – Triangular shape, braille design & more

The 23rd Commonwealth Games have one-of-a-kind medals

The Commonwealth Games 2026 are in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2. With over 215 events available across 10 core sports, the 74 competing nations and territories will be vying to secure podium finishes.

India finished fourth in the last edition in Birmingham with 61 medals and will be looking to improve that record this year. The country has sent a strong contingent to the tournament, even though it has faced some doping violation setbacks.

Regardless, the nation will look towards its stalwarts, like two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and flag-bearer Mirabai Chanu, to fight for gold in their respective sports.

Despite having fewer sports on offer, the Glasgow Games will feature several new aspects in the 96-year-old tournament. Many of these new features make their debut on the Commonwealth Games 2026 medals that athletes will hope to wear around their necks.

Unique features of Commonwealth Games 2026 medals

Ever since the days of the Renaissance, medals have been circular in shape. In fact, Olympic medals have always been round, except for a notable exception in the 1900 Games, which featured rectangular medals.

This year, host city Glasgow has tried to revolutionise the CWG medals, moving away from the usual round shape. Instead, the medals are shaped like a Reuleaux triangle – three circular paths intersecting to create a triangle.

Designed by the Bulgarian-born artist Militsa Milenkova, this design pays homage to Glasgow’s coat of arms, which has the same iconic shape.

In addition to their unique design, the medals will also be accessible, featuring raised braille lettering for visually impaired athletes.

The medals will also feature engraved patterns inspired by the Finnieston Crane, a giant cantilever crane in Glasgow that has turned into a tourist destination. The medals will also feature a tartan texture with three raised levels, representing the three podium steps.
