The defending champions successfully retained their medal with a 3-1 win.

India successfully defended its gold medal in the Table Tennis (TT) men's team event beating Singapore 3-1 in the final at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Harmeet Desai's 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 win over Zhe Yu Clarence Chew sealed the deal for India after Sathiyan Gnanasekaran's win had put India in command. Desai and Gnanasekaran also won their doubles match, while Sharath Kamal Achanta lost his singles clash.

Table Tennis has been a sport that has continuously brought good results at Commonwealth Games for India. Since the sport was introduced at the CWG, India has always brought a medal back from it. Out of five CWG events where Table Tennis has been included, the Indian men’s team have clinched four medals.

The 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games was the only event when the India men's TT team didn’t get success. Of these four medals, there are two bronze and three gold Medals (including this year’s).

India came to this Commonwealth Games with the same men's TT team as they had at the Commonwealth Games 2018. The Indian men’s TT team were the favourites and dominated throughout en route to the gold medal. They have beaten the Finalists Singapore twice at these Commonwealth Games with complete superiority.

You can imagine the supremacy that the Indian team had by looking at the scorecard. There is just one loss in their whole journey at Birmingham Commonwealth Games and they have won all other matches throughout the tournament.

FINAL (India Vs Singapore)

India faced Singapore in the TT men's team Final. Singapore has been one of their rivals in the team events at the CWG.

The final began with a doubles match featuring Sathiyan Gnanasekaran & Harmeet Desai (IND) Vs Izzac Yong Quek and Koen Pang (SGP). India worked hard for the opening game 11-13, but the other two sets were won comfortably 7-11 and 3-11 giving India the lead.

In the second match veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal was up against Zhe Yu Clarance Chew. Chew won the match convincingly by 11-7, 12-14, 11-3, 11-9 margin. This was the first loss for the Indian men’s team at Commonwealth Games 2022. With this win, Singapore came back strongly in the Final contest. Botyh teams were tied on 1-1 after the opening two matches.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran then faced Koen Pang in the third match. He took charge of the game completely and showed some brilliant skills and temperament to clinch the match 10-12, 11-7, 7-11, 4-11 for India. The defending champions needed just one more win to lift the gold medal.

In the fourth match, Harmeet Desai was up against Zhe Yu Clarence Chew. Desai won the match in straight sets 8-11, 5-11, 6-11 and sealed the gold for India with a score line of 1-3.

Singapore gave a pretty good fight to India in the finals but only managed to win one match out of 4 that were played in the finals and India won the Gold medal with one match sparing.

Once again the Indian men’s team have shown their supremacy with the guidance of the experienced Achanta Sharath Kamal and the master talents like Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty and won yet another gold medal in this event. Although the Table Tennis draws haven’t concluded yet. They will be showing their presence in singles and doubles events later in this Commonwealth Games.
