Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 2 Results: No medal; Sachin Siwach, women's lawn bowls duo win
Putul Sonowal suffered a defeat after two consecutive wins
India enjoyed another encouraging day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Saturday, with boxer Sachin Siwach advancing to the men’s 60kg pre-quarterfinals and the lawn bowls women’s pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh extending their unbeaten run to three matches.
India had opened its medal account on Friday when Jhandu Kumar clinched bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event.

Medal hopeful Sachin Siwach overcame a tough challenge from familiar rival Keoma Al-Ahmadieh of Canada, winning their men’s 60kg Round of 32 bout 4-1 via split decision at the SEC Centre. The 26-year-old will now take on England’s William Hewitt in the Round of 16.
Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh continued their impressive campaign with a third consecutive victory in the women’s pairs competition. The Indian duo edged past Tonga 2-0 in a tie-breaker during their Section B third-round match, strengthening their chances of reaching the semifinals.
They will next face Namibia on Sunday. India and England both remain unbeaten with three wins from three matches in Section B, although England lead the standings on set count.
In the men’s singles, Putul Sonowal suffered his first loss of the tournament after consecutive victories. The Assam Police officer went down 0-2 (4-8, 8-9) to Malaysia’s Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in his third-round Section D match. After dropping the opening set, Sonowal trailed 5-9 in the second before staging a spirited comeback in End 7. However, he narrowly lost the set and the match.

The 43-year-old had made headlines earlier by defeating reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in the opening round before overcoming Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands in a second-round tie-break. He currently sits second in the Section D standings and will face Shaun James Parnis of Malta on Sunday.
India’s swimmers endured a disappointing outing in the men’s 400m freestyle. Dhakshan Shashikumar clocked 3:58.09 to finish 15th, while Aryan Nehra recorded 4:00.26 to place 16th among 27 competitors in the heats at the Tollcross Swimming Centre. Neither swimmer qualified for the final.
India’s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team suffered a heavy 16-1 defeat to Wales in their Group B encounter. The Indian side struggled to match Wales’ intensity and managed to convert just one of its 12 scoring attempts as Wales dominated throughout.
Sunday promises to be an exciting day for India, with Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu expected to begin her campaign and defend her Commonwealth Games title. The weightlifting competition also gets underway, with India looking to continue its dominance despite a disrupted build-up.
India’s squad was reduced from 16 to 11 lifters following multiple doping violations, with Dilbag Singh (96kg) becoming the latest withdrawal earlier this week. Even so, India remains one of the favourites, aided by the absence of traditional powerhouses China and North Korea.

- Dhakshan Shashikumar and Aryan Nehra were eliminated in the heats of the men’s 400m freestyle.
3×3 Wheelchair Basketball
- India lost 16-1 to Wales in a Group B match.
Lawn Bowls (Men’s Singles)
- Putul Sonowal lost 0-2 (4-8, 8-9) to Malaysia’s Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in Section D.
Gymnastics
- India missed out on the women’s team medal, but Protistha Samanta topped the vault standings and is on course to qualify for the individual vault final.
