Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 3 Results: India bag gold, 2 silvers in weightlifting; heartbreak in lawn bowls, mixed day in boxing

India won three medals on July 26

Raja Muthupandi’s journey to a Commonwealth Games medal has been years in the making. The Indian weightlifter made his CWG debut at Gold Coast 2018, finishing sixth in the men’s 62kg category.

A serious elbow ligament injury in 2019 threatened to derail his career, while the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his rehabilitation. Around the same time, he also moved up to the 67kg division, where Olympic champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga dominated the Indian scene.

Jeremy’s supremacy meant Raja missed out on the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where Jeremy went on to win gold. But with Jeremy’s decline in form, Raja earned another opportunity after moving to the 65kg category. He finished ninth at the 2025 World Championships with a personal-best total of 299kg (130kg snatch + 169kg clean and jerk).

Now, Raja returns from Glasgow as a Commonwealth Games silver medallist. India suffered a heavy 21-4 defeat to Scotland in the women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball competition.

Reena Gupta scored two points, while Laxmi Rayannavar and Minakshi Jadhav added one each. Scotland were led by Lea Smith (11 points) and Robyn Love (9), with Jodie Waite contributing one. India have now lost both of their pool-stage matches. India’s women’s pairs Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign ended in dramatic fashion.

Pinki Singh delivered a superb final bowl to finish close to the jack, only for England’s Sian Honnor to produce an even better effort. Her final bowl clipped Pinki’s shot before finishing inches closer to the jack. England went on to edge India in a thrilling tiebreak, knocking the Indian pair out of the competition.

Earlier, Rupa Rani Tirkey had made a bright start, placing her opening bowl right next to the jack. Amy Pharaoh responded well but remained further away. Rupa’s third bowl restored India’s advantage after her second drifted off line, but Pharaoh eventually managed to disrupt India’s position, setting up the decisive finish.

Preeti Pawar produced a commanding performance to book her place in the women’s 54kg quarterfinals. Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje tried to increase the tempo in the second round, but Preeti responded with a clinical display, landing a series of heavy punches. After Mtenje received a second standing eight count, the referee stopped the contest, awarding Preeti victory by RSC (Referee Stops Contest).

Mirabai Chanu once again proved why she is one of India’s greatest weightlifters. The Olympic silver medallist successfully lifted 105kg to seal the women’s 48kg title, breaking into a smile as she secured her third Commonwealth Games gold medal. The victory also gave India its first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games.
