Dilip Gavit wins gold, Basil bags silver as India seal 1-2 finish in men's 100m T47 at Commonwealth Games 2026

This is India’s first-ever para-athletics medal in 100m race at CWG.
Incredible scenes occurred at the Commonwealth Games 2026, late on Day 7, as Dilip Gavit and Mohammed Basil M went one-two in the men’s 100m T47 final, scripting a landmark moment for Indian para-athletics.
Gavit won it in 10.71 seconds, setting a new Commonwealth Games Record. Basil wasn’t far off as he clocked 10.83 to take silver, just ahead of England’s Kevin Santos, who had to settle for bronze at 10.85.

The way the race unfolded tells you a lot about both men. Gavit went hard from the gun and never really let anyone back in. Basil took a beat longer to get going, but the last 30 metres belonged to him, and it turned into a photo finish with Santos.
The stories of both these men are incredibly inspiring. Gavit is from Toran Dongari, a village outside Nashik, and comes from a farming family. He lost his right arm below the elbow after a childhood fall that went untreated and turned serious.
Running is what gave him something to hold onto after that, and Coach Vaijnath Kale spotted the talent early. Gold at the 2022 Asian Para Games and a Paralympic final in Paris is what followed.

Basil’s path is different but no less striking. He’s from Veliyancode, a small coastal town in Kerala, and was born with a congenital limb deficiency.
Training at LNCPE-SAI in Thiruvananthapuram under coach Seenivasan, he has been quietly stacking up golds at the Indian Open, Delhi Grand Prix, and Glasgow 2026, where both these Indians officially announced themselves to the rest of the world.
