Gulveer Singh etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Indian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the 10,000m by claiming silver in a thrilling race at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday.
The Indian distance-running star clocked 27:49.78s to finish second behind Australiaâs Ky Robinson, who claimed gold in 27:48.93, while Australiaâs Ky Robinson claimed gold with a timing of 27:48.93 while Gulveer bagged silver (27:49.78) and David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man took bronze (27:50.28). The top three were separated by less than a second in one of the closest distance races of the Games.

Competing in a quality 15-man field, featuring some of the worldâs leading distance runners, Gulveer executed a near-perfect tactical race.
He stayed comfortably within the leading pack throughout, refusing to be dropped as the pace increased over the closing stages. Although he briefly slipped outside the top three with just over three kilometres remaining, the Indian remained within touching distance of the leaders.
The race came alive over the final lap as Gulveer unleashed a blistering finishing sprint. Timing his surge to perfection, he swept past several contenders, including Olympic medallist Edwin Kurgat of Kenya, to snatch the silver medal in the closing metres and complete a stunning upset.
The medal marks another landmark achievement for the 27-year-old, who has emerged as the face of Indiaâs distance-running revolution over the past few seasons.
Born in Sirsa village in Uttar Pradeshâs Aligarh district, Gulveer initially trained on village roads while preparing to join the Indian Army.
Since enlisting in the Grenadiers Regiment in 2018, he has developed into Indiaâs premier long-distance runner by winning bronze at the 2022 Asian Games before completing a historic distance double at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, where he won gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m.

A prolific record-breaker, Gulveer currently holds the Indian national records in the 5,000m, 10,000m, one mile and half-marathon.
He also became the first Indian to run a sub-four-minute mile and the first to complete a half-marathon in under an hour, while his 12:59.77 indoor 5,000m earlier this year made him the first Asian athlete to break the 13-minute barrier indoors.
Gulveerâs silver came in a race that ended nearly four decades of East African dominance, with Kenya and Uganda failing to reach the podium in the menâs 10,000m for the first time since 1986.
