The last time India hosted the Commonwealth Games was in 2010.

India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, proposing Ahmedabad as the host city.

An India delegation, led by Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, presented the proposal to the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee in London on September 23.

The 2030 Games are significant as they mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Sports Movement.

“India’s bid positions Ahmedabad as the host city for this Centenary edition, offering a compact Games footprint centred on international-standard venues, robust transport systems, and high-quality accommodation,” the government stated in an official release.

If selected, the upcoming Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the Narendra Modi Stadium will serve as the primary venues, alongside other existing stadiums.

Further explaining why Ahmedabad is the ideal city to host the multi-sport event, the Gujarat Govt. stated that the city has a “proven record” and experience to host such big international events, citing examples of the ICC World Cup as well as the Indian Premier League(IPL).

Minister of State for Sports Harsh Sanghavi echoed that sentiment in post on X (formerly Twitter). “With world-class venues, seamless infrastructure, and a proven track record of hosting global sporting events, Ahmedabad is all set to script history!” he said.

PT Usha also shared her views stating, “India’s bid is not just about capability, but about values. Ahmedabad is ready to pick up the baton from Glasgow 2026 and act as a springboard to the 2034 Games, ensuring the centenary edition honours the past while shaping the future of Commonwealth Sport,” she said in the release.

The final decision on the 2030 Commonwealth Games host city is expected in the coming months. If successful, it would mark the second time India has hosted the Games and the first time the event would be held in Gujarat. This will also enhance India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics in the same city of Ahmedabad.
