If selected, Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, India’s first in 20 years.
On the evening of National Sports Day, August 29, India formally submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
The proposal was submitted in London by an Indian delegation led by Shri Harsh Sanghavi, Minister of Sports, Government of Gujarat, along with representatives from the Commonwealth Games Association of India and the Gujarat government.
The 2030 Games will be special for both India and the Commonwealth, as it will mark the 100th edition of the event.
“The Centenary Games will celebrate sporting excellence, unity, and shared values,” Harsh Sanghavi said. He also pointed out that India’s Games will be based on the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ meaning “the world is one family,” and guided by Atithi Devo Bhava – “the guest is divine.”
The President of the Indian Olympic Association and Commonwealth Games Association of India PT Usha, believed that the bid reflects the hopes of the entire country.
“The Games in Ahmedabad will show India’s sporting strengths and values of friendship, respect, and inclusivity. We are ready to welcome the Commonwealth family with warmth and excellence and inspire the next generation through sport,” she said.
If Ahmedabad is chosen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), it will be the first time India hosts the Games since 2010 in New Delhi.

The bid is not just about hosting world-class sport, but also about showcasing India on the global stage and celebrating the spirit of the Commonwealth.
Should India get the hosting rights, it will bolster the nation’s credentials to stage the 2036 Olympic Games—which it plans to host in Ahmedabad itself.
Earlier this week, the Indian union cabinet had approved the bid and also gave a go-ahead to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) along with the required guarantees from ministries and authorities concerned.
Apart from India, Canada and Nigeria are also in the running to host the multi-sport event, which is a gathering of mainly former British colonies. However, recent reports suggested that Canada might withdraw its bid after Ontario—one of the four Canadian provinces that combined to put forward a joint bid—pulled out from the alliance. Similarly, Nigeria’s interest hasn’t yet advanced to a formal bid.
The host city for the 2030 CWG will be announced in November at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.
Scotland’s Glasgow will also host the upcoming edition of the Games next year. However, this edition will be a toned-down version of the event after original hosts Victoria, a state in Australia, pulled back citing escalating costs.
