India eyes winning more medals in the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow
The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will begin on July 23, marking the country’s 19th appearance in the tournament. Ever since making its debut in 1934 as part of the British Empire, India has progressed in leaps and bounds, finishing fourth in the 2022 edition with 61 medals.
India has had a winning pedigree in the tournament since the beginning. Anwar Rashid won the country’s first medal in 1934, clinching a bronze medal in the men’s 74kg freestyle wrestling.
After independence, India remained a part of the Commonwealth of Nations. Milkha Singh won independent India’s first medal at the tournament in 1958, claiming gold in the men’s 440-yard sprint. Lila Ram also won gold in the same edition in men’s 100 kg freestyle wrestling.
Stephanie D’Souza and Elizabeth Davenport became the first women to represent the country in the tournament in the same year.

India’s medals at Commonwealth Games
India has won 203 gold medals, 190 silver medals, and 171 bronze medals across 18 editions. The country’s most fruitful outing was in the 2010 edition in New Delhi, where athletes won 101 medals, including 38 golds, 27 silvers, and 36 bronzes.
Shooting has been, by far, the most successful sport in terms of medals, bringing in a total of 135 medals, including 63 golds. Wrestling (114 medals with 49 golds) and Weightlifting (133 medals with 46 golds) are the other two most fruitful sports for Indian athletes.
Overall, the country has registered at least one medal in 17 sports, winning golds in 13 of them.
Who is the most successful Indian athlete in Commonwealth Games?
Considering shooting’s success in bringing medals for the country, it is no surprise that it is a shooter who is India’s most successful participant in the Commonwealth Games. That honour belongs to pistol shooter Jaspal Rana, who has 15 medals (nine golds, four silvers, two bronzes).
Another shooter, Samresh Jung, holds the record for the most medals won in a single CWG edition, bagging seven medals (five golds, one silver, one bronze) in the 2006 edition in Melbourne.
How many Commonwealth Games has India hosted?
So far, India has hosted just one edition of the tournament: the 2010 edition. It was in New Delhi. It was the largest multi-sport event ever hosted in the country. The country will host the Games for the second time in 2030, with Ahmedabad winning the bid to become the host city.
