What is India’s highest finish in medal tally at Commonwealth Games?

India sits fourth at the 23rd Commonwealth Games

Indian athletes had a stunning medal haul on Day 9 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026, taking the country’s total tally to 39 medals, including 13 golds, 17 silvers, and nine bronzes. This has propelled the country to fourth place in the overall medal standings at the Glasgow Games, marking one of the country’s best finishes in the multisport tournament.

The boxing contingent has been the biggest source of medals, with a total of 10 pugilists clinching seven golds and three silvers. Four judokas have bagged medals, including the country’s first-ever gold medals in the sport.

Mirabai Chanu made history, winning gold in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting event. This marked her third consecutive CWG gold. Indian weightlifters have clinched a total of eight medals at the Glasgow Games, including one gold, six silvers, and one bronze.

All this has led to India securing a respectable fourth position in the medal tally. Australia currently sits at the top of the standings with 158 medals. England sit second with 102 medals, followed by Canada with 59 medals.

However, India’s current fourth place is not the country’s best performance at the Commonwealth Games. In fact, fourth place would only equal the country’s third-best finish in the tournament, having also finished in fourth place in three other editions.

India’s best record, both in terms of total medals won and the highest finish in the medal tally, came at the 2010 CWG in New Delhi, the only edition hosted in India.

India bagged a total of 101 medals. This was the first and only time that the country crossed the 100-medal mark in a single edition. India’s medal tally included an incredible 38 gold medals, 27 silver medals, and 36 bronze medals.

This medal haul secured India an incredible second-place finish in the New Delhi 2010 Games standings behind Australia (177 medals).

India’s next best finishes at the Commonwealth Games are:

Third place: Gold Coast 2018 Games (66 medals)

Fourth place: Manchester 2002 Games (69 medals), Melbourne 2006 Games (50 medals), Birmingham 2022 Games (61 medals), Glasgow 2026 Games (39 medals)
