Commonwealth Games 2026: India’s medal tally after Day 1, 24th July
Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar clinched a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category.
Nothing can match the excitement of a quadrennial multi-sport event. While it is being held in a curtailed manner this time, the eyes of the sporting world are firmly set on the Commonwealth Games 2026, being played out from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.
A 125-member Indian contingent will be seen in action. In the previous edition in Birmingham, the nation had finished fourth with an overall tally of 61 medals, including 22 golds. Replicating the same this time would be difficult, considering there is only a total of ten sports now, with the likes of shooting, archery, wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and hockey absent from the Games.
However, the athletes would be looking to make an impression. The significance of this is amplified by India’s ambitions to host the next Commonwealth Games in 2030. A strong showing here should be the bare minimum expectation.

Number of medals Indian athletes contested on 24th July
There was a total of six events, in which Indians were in medal contention on the first day of the event. All four para-powerlifting finals were conducted. Right at the end of the day, Jhandu Kumar unlocked India’s medal tally, clinching bronze in the men’s heavyweight category, with a total of 130.9 points. Compatriot Sudhir finished sixth with 114.1 points.
Earlier, Ashok commenced proceedings on a decent note, finishing fourth in the men’s lightweight section. The difference between him and Malaysian Bonnie Gustin at third spot was a substantial sum of 9.7 points, though. Parmjeet Kumar finished seventh.
Following that, Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Women’s Lightweight event. Kasthuri Rajamani, in the Women’s Heavyweight final, had a shocker, as she failed to lift the weights in any of her three attempts.
A heartbreak ensued in the Men’s 100m Freestyle S13 final as Ravi Veera Venkata Budigina narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth with a timing of 57.57 seconds. He had finished third in the Heats at the beginning of the day. Fellow Indian Ali Imam ended in the seventh spot.
In the Artistic Gymnastics Men’s Team Final, India led the pack till the conclusion of Subdivision 2 but eventually ended at the seventh spot with a total of 208.55 points. In what is good news, though, Tapan Mohanty and Yogeshwar Singh will be competing in the all-around final.
Commonwealth Games 2026: Updated Indian medal tally after 24th July
India currently stands in the 9th spot with a solitary bronze medal in the medal standings at the Commonwealth Games 2026. It is also worth noting that boxer Lovlina Borgohain has already been assured of a medal, considering that she has been given a bye and will be directly playing in the Women’s 75kg boxing semifinal.
What to expect from Indian contingent on 25th July?
The number of medal events slated for India on Day 2 is much lower. Artistic Gymnastics once again presents one of them, with Pranati Nayak, Nishka Agarwal, Eshita Rewale, and Protistha Samanta competing in the Individual Qualification, which also doubles up as the Women’s Team Final.
The other potential final is the men’s swimming 400 m freestyle event. However, that would depend on whether Dhakshan Shashikumar and Aryan Nehra can qualify from the heats, set to be conducted earlier in the day.
After a unanimous victory by Jadumani Singh Mandengbam against home favourite Aaron Cullen in the boxing men’s 55 kg category on the opening day, Sachin Siwach is set to commence his campaign. He would be taking on Canadian Keoma Al-Ahmadieh in a round of 32 men’s 60 kg fixture.
Lawn bowls action continues on Saturday. The duo of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh, who have started off with victories against Malta and South Africa in the Women’s Pairs section, would be looking to keep the momentum going against Tonga.
In Men’s Singles, Putul Sonowal has been in red-hot form, having downed reigning Outdoor World Champion Ryan Bester (Canada) as well as Cecil Alexander (Falk Islands), holding his nerve in tiebreaks on two successive days. He would now want to keep the streak running when he faces Malaysian Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple.
