Commonwealth Games 2026: India’s medal tally after Day 3, 26th July

India won a medal in each of the three weightlifting finals at the Commonwealth Games scheduled on Sunday.
The start of weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 gave India badly needed momentum, as the nation boosted its medal tally to four. Mirabai Chanu further elevated her position as a sporting great, clinching a gold medal in an effortless manner. Joining her were Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi, who fought tooth and nail to eventually clinch silver medals.
While it was indeed a productive day, one can view the overall results as a mixed bag. The podium finishes were combined with some heartbreaking setbacks.
The boxers had a decent day in the round of 16 fixtures. Preeti Pawar hammered Deborah Mtenje of Malawi, with the referee stopping the clash in the second round. Jadumani Singh then brought about a unanimous victory against Sumama Rehman in what was an engaging Men’s 55 kg encounter. Nuhu Batte from Uganda managed a sensational victory to down Aditya Yadav 3-2 in the men’s 65 kg—the first Indian grappler to crash out at the CWG 2026.

Disappointment ensued, though, in lawn bowls. The duo of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh crashed out in the Women’s Pairs events owing to back-to-back heartbreaking losses in tiebreakers on the same day. They first went down 5-7, 10-1, 0-3 in a shock loss against Namibia. In what was a virtual knockout later in the day, England got the better of them 3-4 10-3 1-0.
Putul Sonowal’s campaign, which had started off with a win against Outdoor World Champion Ryan Bester, came to a sorry end with two defeats in as many days. On Sunday, he bowed down fighting against Shaun James Parnis of Malta 4-10 7-7.
In the Women’s 3X3 Wheelchair Basketball, India suffered a second successive hammering. Having lost 4-21 against Scotland, they would have to defeat Nigeria in their final pool B match to stay alive.
Number of medals Indian athletes contested on 26th July
India contested a total of five medal events on Sunday. Three of them involved weightlifting, resulting in one gold and two silver medals.
Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver medallist Mirabai Chanu completed a hat-trick of gold medals at the quadrennial event, lifting a total weight of 190kg in the Women’s 48kg event. Interestingly, the legend, who turns 32 next month, started off with a stutter in the Snatch as well as the Clean and Jerk segments as she failed to lift the weights on her first attempt.
However, she eventually lifted 85kg and 105kg, respectively, achieving the Games Record in both sections. It is also worth noting that Mirabai decided not to push herself to the extreme in order to stay fit for the Asian Games in September.
Earlier, Rishikanta Singh started the day on an auspicious note, finishing at the second spot in the Men’s 60kg final. He did fight hard for a top-of-the-podium finish, but Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq was too good on the day, shattering the Games record. The Indian and the Malaysian both lifted 121kg in the Snatch section, but the former’s best effort of 143kg in the Clean and Jerk segment was 9kg short of his opponent’s tally.

Raja Muthupandi then kept the streak going in Men’s 65kg, winning another silver. Interestingly, he achieved successful lifts only in his second attempt in both sections. His cumulative tally of 126 kg and 160kg secured him the second spot in each segment but was 7kg and 6kg less than that of the Malaysian, who broke the Games record in snatch as well as clean and jerk.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s All-Around Final in Artistic Gymnastics, Tapan Mohanty finished 15th with a score of 70.100. It is worth noting that 79,000 was the mark that needed to be breached to finish on the podium.
In the Men’s 4 x 200m Freestyle competition, Dhakshan Shashikumar, Aneesh Gowda, Aryan Nehra, and Srihari Nataraj guided India to the third spot in their heat. They eventually finished sixth in the final with a time of 7:29.84. In what was a sensational race, Australia managed to surpass the existing games record.
Commonwealth Games 2026: Updated Indian medal tally after 26th July

India has now risen to eighth spot in the Commonwealth Games medals tally. The country has a total of four medals—one gold, two silver, and one bronze. All four of them have won in weightlifting, with one of them in the para-powerlifting section.
What to expect from Indian contingent on 27th July?
A very busy day again awaits the Indian contingent. The weightlifters would be looking to continue their impressive momentum, with Gynaeswari Yadav (Women’s 53kg), Bindyarani Devi (Women’s 58kg), and Valluri Ajaya Babu (Men’s 79kg) competing for top honors. It is worth noting that Bindyarani had clinched a silver medal in the previous edition, albeit in the 55kg category.
Track and field action commences on Day 4. Participating in the medal events will be Shilpa Shyla, Sharmila (Women’s Shot Put F57), Tejaswin Shankar, Sarvesh Kushare, Aadarsh Ram (Men’s High Jump), Rakeshbhai Bhatt, and Shreyansh Trivedi (Men’s 100m T38). The Men’s 110m Hurdles final is also scheduled, for which Tejas Shirse would be looking to qualify from the heats scheduled earlier in the day.

Others set to make an appearance in athletics are Gurindervir Singh (Men’s 100m Heats), Murali Sreeshankar, and Lokesh Satyanathan (Men’s Long Jump qualification).
In artistic gymnastics, Protistha Samanta would be looking to break the deadlock for the nation in the Women’s Vault Final at the Commonwealth Games.
A number of medal events are also lined up for swimming. While Aryan Nehra (Men’s 800m Freestyle) will be competing in the Final scheduled later in the day, Swatik Patel (Men’s 100m Backstroke SB9) and Sajan Prakash (Men’s 200m Butterfly) would need to emerge through their respective heats scheduled early in the day.
Boxing too continues, with Sachin Siwach (Men’s 60kg), Ankush (Men’s 80kg), Sakshi (Women’s 51kg), and Sumit (Men’s 70kg) looking to make their place in the quarterfinals, which would turn out to be a step away from a podium finish.
