Lovepreet Singh set a new CWG record in Snatch with a lift of 176 kg

Lovepreet Singh gave everything he had at the Commonwealth Games 2026, but a stunning final lift from New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti meant that the Indian had to settle for silver, not gold, in the men’s 110+ kg final in Glasgow on Thursday.

The 28-year-old from Amritsar was in imperious form in the snatch, opening well before saving his best for last, producing a massive 176 kg that broke the Commonwealth Games record and put him firmly in control heading into the clean and jerk.

He carried that momentum forward, clearing lift after lift to touch 212kg in the clean and jerk, taking his combined total to 388kg.

However, much to Singh’s and the Indian fans’ disappointment, Liti had other plans. The Kiwi lifter, who trailed for the majority of the contest, produced a monster clean and jerk of 223kg on his final attempt, a lift that pushed his total to 389kg and flipped the result on its head in an instant.

Singh already knew about Liti’s plans to lift such a high weight and went for an ambitious lift on his third attempt to extend his lead, only for the bar to prove too heavy for him. Despite the final heartbreak, Singh’s feat is one full of grit, resilience, and inspiration.

Starting out at the age of 13 in his village in Punjab, he trained under local coaches before making his way to the national camp in Patiala and steadily climbed the ranks after winning bronze at Birmingham 2022. He has now recorded a new Commonwealth Games record in the Glasgow 2026 edition.

This silver medal marks India’s eighth weightlifting medal of these Games, with the discipline single-handedly carrying India’s medal tally on the points table.
