Mirabai Chanu to compete in women’s 48 kg weightlifting category
India are striving for a fruitful outing in the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2026, which starts on Thursday, July 23, in Glasgow, Scotland. After finishing fourth in Birmingham 2022 with 61 medals, the country will be looking for a similar tally in this edition, and star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is among those who will look to challenge for the gold.
The 31-year-old is pushing for an incredible third straight gold medal, and a fourth consecutive medal overall in CWG. She is one of the 11 weightlifters representing India in Glasgow, comprising five men and six women. The weightlifting events will be held at the SEC Armadillo.
India’s weightlifting coach, Vijay Sharma, said that Chanu will treat the Commonwealth Games as “a practice event” for the Asian Games 2026, which starts on September 19. Chanu is still waiting for her maiden Asian Games medal.
Other than Chanu, 2022 bronze medallists Harjinder Kaur and Lovepreet Singh are big names who will look to improve their records in the tournament. Eight para powerlifters have also been selected for the Glasgow Games.

Mirabai Chanu’s schedule at CWG 2026
The weightlifting event will start on Sunday, the third day of the tournament. See the timings below in IST:
- Day 1 (July 26): 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, 11:00 PM to 1:30 AM
- Day 2 (July 27): 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, 5:30 PM to 8:15 PM, 12:30 AM to 3:00 AM
- Day 3 (July 28): 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, 11:00 PM to 1:30 AM
- Day 4 (July 29): 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, 11:00 PM to 1:30 AM
- Day 5 (July 30): 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, 11:00 PM to 1:30 AM

Meanwhile, para powerlifting will take place at the same venue on July 24. The sessions will take place from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM and 10:30 PM to 2:00 AM.
