Murali Sreeshankar claims second successive long jump silver at Commonwealth Games

Sreeshanker also clinched silver at Birmingham 2022
Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar clinched the silver medal in the men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Wednesday, becoming the first Indian to win two Commonwealth Games medals in the event.
The 27-year-old registered a best leap of 8.09m, finishing behind Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle, who secured gold with 8.15m. Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie claimed the bronze medal with 8.08m, just one centimetre behind the Indian.

For Sreeshankar, the silver marked another significant milestone in an inspiring comeback after a serious knee injury in 2024 ruled him out of the Paris Olympics and threatened to derail his career.
Less than two years later, he returned to the Commonwealth Games podium, adding to the silver medal he won at Birmingham 2022.
Sreeshankar opened the competition strongly with a leap of 8.03m in his first attempt before improving to 8.09m in the second round to move into the lead.
He fouled his third and fourth attempts but remained in the gold-medal position until Gayle produced a championship-winning jump of 8.15m in the fourth round.
The Indian attempted to respond in his final two jumps but was unable to better Gayle’s mark and settled for silver in a closely contested final.

The result came despite Sreeshankar entering Glasgow on the back of a season-best 8.38m, the second-best jump of his career, which he achieved at the National Inter-State Championships earlier this year.
Another Indian in the final, Lokesh Sathyanathan, finished fifth with a best effort of 7.97m. The NCAA indoor champion was unable to breach the eight-meter mark, with his opening jump remaining his best across all six attempts.
Having twice stood on the Commonwealth Games podium, Sreeshankar has set a new benchmark for Indian athletics in the long jump while underscoring the remarkable resilience that has defined his return from injury.
The silver also added to India’s growing medal tally in athletics at Glasgow 2026, following podium finishes by Sarvesh Kushare in the men’s high jump and Gulveer Singh in the men’s 10,000m.
