Neeraj Chopra is aiming for his second Commonwealth Games gold.

India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra will begin his campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday, July 30.

The star javelin thrower, who won the title at the Gold Coast 2018 Games, will be looking for his second CWG gold when he takes the field in the qualification round alongside fellow Indians Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh.

The men’s javelin throw event takes place in two stages – both at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. The qualification round will take place at noon IST on Thursday, while the medal event will follow in the early hours of Saturday, August 1.

While Neeraj will enter the tournament as one of the favourites, he will face a lot of competition in both qualification and the final. A total of 18 athletes from 14 countries will compete in the qualification round. India have sent the largest contingent to the event with three throwers, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka have two entrants each.

All athletes who breach the automatic qualification mark of 84m will seal a place in the final round. If fewer than 12 athletes breach this mark, the ones who have managed the best distances will move to the medal event. A total of 12 athletes will compete in the final.

For Neeraj, the Glasgow Games will be a moment of redemption. A serious lower back injury forced him to withdraw from the Birmingham 2022 Games. Injury problems also disrupted his preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics, where arch-rival Arshad Nadeem bested him to clinch gold.

Neeraj spent most of the year recuperating from a lower back injury that he suffered before the World Athletics Championships 2025 last September. He has competed just once this season, finishing fourth at the Doha Diamond League in June with a best throw of 85.69m.

Despite entering the CWG 2026 with a limited season, Neeraj is in peak physical condition, according to his coach. The Indian star will face tough competition from both Nadeem and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage as he vies for his second CWG gold.
