Neeraj Chopra is one of India’s leading medal contenders in Glasgow

The Commonwealth Games 2026 start on Thursday, July 23, in Glasgow. India, which finished fourth in Birmingham 2022 with 61 medals, including 22 golds, will look for a similarly fruitful or even better outing this year.

With several sports being removed from this edition, including hockey, table tennis, and badminton, India’s medal ambitions have taken a big hit. However, the nation has named a strong athletics contingent, with India’s golden boy, Neeraj Chopra, being one of those hoping to claim the top prize in the javelin throw.

The two-time Olympic medallist will face one of the biggest showdowns in the tournament when he goes up against his arch-nemesis, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. This duo produced one of the biggest rivalries heading into the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Nadeem beat Chopra to win gold.

Along with Mirabai Chanu and Gurvinder Singh, Neeraj is among the most successful athletes to headline the Indian contingent in the CWG.

The javelin thrower will have a point to prove in the upcoming tournament as he had to withdraw from the previous edition due to a groin injury and will look to add to the gold medal he won in the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
