Rishikanta Singh won his maiden Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow
Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh dedicated his silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and weightlifting legend Mirabai Chanu. The 28-year-old athlete produced a record-breaking performance in Glasgow, finishing second in the men’s 60 kg event.
Rishikanta was locked in a head-to-head duel with Malaysia’s Aniq Kasdan in the event, with the latter eventually winning the gold medal.
The Indian lifter registered a lift of 121 kg in snatch, setting a new CWG record. He then managed 143 kg in clean and jerk, finishing with a total of 264 kg, behind Kasdan’s 273 kg. Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya claimed the bronze medal with a total lift of 260 kg.

Rishikanta Singh dedicates medal to Modi & Chanu
Speaking to IANS after the event, Rishikanta expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as members of the weightlifting contingent.
“Firstly, I dedicate this medal to the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, because he has given a lot of benefits to our sports,” he said. “Then, to the Weightlifting Federation (of India) President, Sahdev Yadav, and weightlifting chief coach Vijay Sharma.”
“Especially from Manipur, Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, I dedicate this to our sister. She and coach Vijay Sharma together have taught us.”

Narendra Modi congratulates Rishikanta
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also heaped praise on the silver medallist, taking to social media to highlight his record-breaking achievement at the Glasgow Games.
“Very proud of Indian lifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal and also achieving his personal best,” Modi wrote on X.
“His determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation. May he continue to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes. Best wishes for his future endeavours!”
