Why might Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage shatter Neeraj Chopra’s dream of winning gold at CWG 2026?

As is the case in every tournament he participates in, India’s Neeraj Chopra is yet again a solid favourite to clinch gold in the men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Having already won the javelin throw title once at the Gold Coast 2018 Games, Neeraj is again looking to assert his dominance. The two-time Olympic medallist, joined by fellow Indians Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh, will be vying for the top prizes on August 1.

However, the 28-year-old Indian star faces a massive roadblock en route to his second CWG gold medal in the form of Sri Lanka’s 23-year-old javelin throw sensation, Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage.

Far from a household name, unlike Neeraj, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, or Grenada’s Anderson Peters, Pathirage has emerged as not just a dark horse at the Glasgow Games but also a real threat to Neeraj’s shot at gold.

Let’s look at some reasons why Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage can shatter Neeraj’s dream of winning gold at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Pathirage’s wonderful 2026 season

Originally an aspiring fast bowler, Pathirage transitioned to javelin throw in 2017 on his father’s advice. He quickly became one of the island nation’s leading athletes, but achieved his breakthrough over the last two years.

After registering a fourth-place finish at the Asian Championships last year, he has enjoyed unprecedented levels of success in 2026.

He took part in the Golden Gala 2026 in Rome, clinching gold in the men’s javelin throw event with a monstrous 92.62m throw. It was the Sri Lankan’s personal best, but it was the eighth-longest throw in recorded history.

Pathirage, however, was far from a one-hit wonder. The young athlete proved his mettle in high-pressure competitions at the Doha Diamond League in June. Locked in a tense final round against Peters and Curtis Thompson, he clinched gold with an 88.68m throw. Neeraj also took part in that event, finishing fourth with an 85.69m throw.

The qualification results of javelin throw in Glasgow

Pathirage’s superb form of late continued in the men’s javelin throw qualification round at the Commonwealth Games 2026 at the Scotstoun Stadium. The weather conditions in Glasgow were extremely tricky for all 18 athletes, none of whom could cross the automatic qualification mark set at 84m.

However, the Sri Lankan asserted his dominance even in such difficult circumstances, registering an 82.84m throw in his very first attempt. This saw him go top of the qualification standings, and remain there. Pathirage did not even go through his remaining two attempts.

Neeraj, on the other hand, had a slow start in the qualification round. He began with a respectable throw of 76.28m. His second attempt of 79.61m saw him rise to fifth in the standings – enough to secure qualification. The Indian star did not go through with his final attempt.

While qualification rounds do not guarantee how an athlete will perform in the final round, it sure serves as a sign of things to come.

Neeraj Chopra’s injury-plagued build-up

Unlike Pathirage’s excellent 2026 season, Neeraj’s preparations have been ravaged by a persistent lower-back injury in the last few years. This injury flared up in September 2025 just before the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Neeraj finished eighth with a best throw of 84.03m – his career-worst finish.

Since then, Neeraj has gone through a number of career changes. He parted ways with legendary coach Jan Zelezny and has since been training under his childhood coach, Jaiveer Chaudhary.

He has undergone extensive rehabilitation to overcome his injury issues. He has competed in just one event in 2026 – the Doha Diamond League meeting, finishing fourth. India’s chief athletics coach, Radhakrishnan Nair, claimed that Neeraj is in “perfect shape” going into the CWG 2026, but question marks continue to hang over the Indian star’s head.
