A CWG medal continues to elude Tajinderpal Singh Toor
India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor had a disappointing outing in the Commonwealth Games 2026 men’s shot put final on Thursday, July 30, finishing fifth and narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
The 31-year-old, who entered as one of India’s strongest hopes of ending the country’s wait for its first-ever CWG men’s shot put medal, finished with a best effort of 20.27m.
Following this disappointing exit, Toor revealed that he was nursing a serious injury and it had a big impact on his performance at the Scotstoun Stadium. The two-time Asian Games gold medallist revealed that he had suffered a calf injury shortly before departing for Glasgow.
“12 days before coming (to CWG 2026), I had a Grade-1 tear in my calf,” Toor told Nnis Sports. “So, because of that, I had to compromise everything for 8-10 days. Even when I came here, I was in pain. Then I met with the doctor and physio. I had at least four or five needling (sessions) in my calf; only then did it get set.”

The veteran athlete also revealed that due to the chronic pain, he even considered pulling out of the event. However, he was convinced to continue, and he managed a fifth-place finish. However, he could not breach the 21m mark in the tournament.
“Even today, I felt like I would cross 21(m), but I didn’t understand (why it didn’t happen),” he said. “In training 15 days ago, I was doing 21.40-21.45. My average throw was around 20.90. But my calf (injury) disturbed me a lot; I was shaken mentally.”

India’s shot put medal wait continues
The result means that India are yet to win a CWG medal in the men’s shot put event. On Thursday, Toor opened with a throw of 20.06m. He managed 19.98m in his second effort and his best effort of 20.27m in the third round.
However, he was unable to improve on this mark, with his final three attempts measuring 19.93m, 20.26m, and 19.79m. His overall performance was a far cry from his personal best of 21.77m.
Fellow Indian Samardeep Singh Gill, who also competed in the final, finished seventh with a best effort of 20.03m.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi of Nigeria claimed gold, registering a best effort of 21.07m. New Zealand’s Tom Walsh claimed silver with 21.03m, and England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze with 20.99m.
