Will Tejaswin Shankar participate in Decathlon after sustaining injury at CWG 2026?
Tejaswin Shankar was forced to withdraw from the Glasgow Games.
India’s Tejaswin Shankar saw his athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 come to an end on Monday, July 27, with a knee injury forcing him out of the men’s high jump event. The Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist withdrew from the event after just one attempt.

Despite entering the tournament as one of India’s strongest athletics medal contenders, Shankar suffered a recurring knee injury during warm-up. He initially tried to soldier through and completed his first attempt of 2.05m, but was then forced to withdraw from the event.
He nevertheless opted to remain at the pit, guiding his teammate, Sarvesh Kushare, who went on to win the silver medal at the same event. Following the contest, a teary-eyed Shankar revealed his reason for withdrawing from the event, as well as his future plans.

Tejaswin Shankar targets Decathlon return
After the men’s high jump event, Shankar revealed that he suffered a flare-up of a recurring patellar tendon problem, known as ‘jumper’s knee’, during warm-up. He initially tried to continue but then had to decide whether it was the right move given the upcoming decathlon.
He eventually decided not to continue in the high jump with one eye on the CWG men’s decathlon event, which starts on Thursday. If the athlete recovers in time, he will participate in that event.
“But I think the good thing is I still have two days before the start of my decathlon. So, that’s why I decided to stop after my first jump. Because I don’t want to ruin the next event that I have,” Shankar said.
“That’s, again, another opportunity. Until I don’t stop or until that event doesn’t break me, until I don’t give up, I’m going to go and use the next two days. Two days to kind of recover and fix this problem. And try and see what we can do. And then try and put out a big score in two days’ time.”

Despite Shankar’s withdrawal from the event, India added several medals on Day 4. Sharmila Dhankar and Shilpa Shyla won a gold and bronze, respectively, in the women’s shot put F57 event.
Three weightlifters – Gyaneshwari Yadav, Bindyarani Devi, and Valluri Ajaya Babu – won two silver medals and a bronze medal.
Will Tejaswin Shankar participate in decathlon at CWG 2026?
Possibly. Despite withdrawing from the men’s high jump due to a knee injury, Shankar confirmed he will attempt to compete in the decathlon starting Thursday if he recovers in time.
