An auction in Indian Premier League is always an exciting event to watch. A whole lot of money is involved in it, and players get life-changing contracts. An overseas star is always the first choice of any IPL franchise, which is why every season we see international stars making money at the auction.
In this article, we will talk about the top ten most expensive international players in the history of IPL auction. The top three of four occasions on this list were recorded in IPL auction 2023.
Here are the Top 10 most expensive overseas buys in IPL auction history
10. Ben Stokes – 14.5 Crores (IPL 2017 Auction) :
Ben Stokes is one of the biggest names in modern cricket. He is also one of the most demanded players in the IPL because of his all-round ability. Stokes has been part of five IPL seasons (pulled out of 2021 due to injury) and has earned over 12 crore at least per season. In 2017, he made his IPL debut when Rising Pune Supergiants acquired the all-rounder for a price of INR 14.5 crore, making him their most expensive player of that auction.
9. Kyle Jamieson – 15 Crores (IPL 2021 Auction) :
New Zealand speedster Kyle Jamieson had an amazing debut year in 2021 when he had success across formats for New Zealand. And he entered the auction, and that international success helped him earn huge money in IPL. RCB bought the Kiwi pacer after spending INR 15 crore on him. But it didn’t turn out to be a wise pick, and he was released in the next season.
8. Pat Cummins – 15.5 Crores (IPL 2020 Auction) :
Pat Cummins made headlines when he returned to IPL in 2020 after missing out on two seasons. With his international form across formats, a few teams were keen to have him on their side. After an intense bidding war, it was Kolkata Knight Riders who eventually had him at a price of INR 15.5 crore, making him the costliest player in that IPL auction.
7. Nicholas Pooran – 16 Crores (IPL 2023 Auction) :
IPL auction 2023 was record-breaking one because it saw some of the top-most costliest players in a single edition. West Indian superstar Nicholas Pooran ended up being the fourth-most expensive player at the event. Lucknow Super Giants signed him at a price of INR 16 crore.
6. Chris Morris – 16.25 Crores (IPL 2021 Auction) :
Former South African all-rounder Chris Morris is one of the most paid international stars in IPL. 5. Ben Stokes – 16.25 Crores (IPL 2023 Auction) :
After missing out on the 2022 season, Ben Stokes registered for the 2023 edition. Chennai Super Kings spent INR 16.25 crore to sign him at IPL auction 2023.
4. Cameron Green – 17.5 Crores (IPL 2023 Auction) :
The 2023 edition saw all-rounders break all previous records in IPL auction. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green had a brilliant T20I series in India, which was noticed by a few IPL franchises. Hence, 4–5 IPL franchises entered the bidding war for him. But in the end, it was Mumbai Indians who signed him at a whopping price of INR 17.5 crore, making him the costliest player by MI in IPL auction.
3. Sam Curran – 18.5 Crores (IPL 2023 Auction) :
Just like Green, it was Sam Curran who entered IPL auction 2023 as one of the high-profile all-rounders. The prime reason was his “Player of the Tournament” winning effort at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Punjab Kings went all out for him and signed him at a record-breaking price of INR 18.5 crore, making him not only the expensive overseas star, but also one of the most costliest player ever in the history of IPL auction.

He was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping price of INR 20.5 crore, and with that, he became the most expensive player in history for a few minutes until hie fellow countryman Mitchell Starc overtook him.
1. Mitchell Starc – 24.75 crores (IPL 2024 auction):
