2024 T20 WC in WI, US & 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan to face change in venues - Reports
According to reports, two upcoming ICC events, 2024 T20 WC and 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan might see a change in venue.
After the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, two other mega events will take place in the next two years. It will be the 2024 T20 World Cup where the defending champions, England, will defend their title. Then, it will be the 2025 Champions Trophy, where Pakistan will enter as the defending champions. However, according to some exclusive media reports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is planning to shift the venues for both marquee events.
Notably, earlier, as per schedule, it was West Indies and USA that were supposed to host the T20 World Cup in 2024, and Pakistan was given the responsibility of hosting the 2025 Champions Trophy. But as per some reports, the ICC will shuffle these events. Though there is no official statement is released, and it is the formal talks between the ICC and other cricket boards.
England emerge as the favorite to host the 2024 T20 World Cup: Report
If the 2024 T20 event is shifted from the West Indies and USA, then England will emerge as the favorites to host the tournament. England are the defending champions after winning the 2022 edition in Australia. Notably, the broadcasters are also in agreement if the next ICC event gets shifted to England. The T20 World Cup is a bigger event, and the USA might not have the relevant cricket infrastructure to host the tournament.
It is one of the reasons that they might pull out of the hosting rights. England, along with Ireland and Scotland, are scheduled to host the 2024 T20 World Cup, but if it goes according to plan, then these UK nations will get the responsibility of hosting the marquee event next year itself. On the other hand, as compensation, the ICC is planning to give the hosting rights to the 2025 Champions Trophy to the West Indies and the USA.
The Champions Trophy is a smaller tournament as compared to the T20 World Cup, so it doesn't need big infrastructure. Thus, the hosting rights might be given to the West Indies and the USA. On the other hand, Pakistan will receive compensation monetarily for the loss that will occur.
