Four batsmen whose all test centuries have come in a winning cause

Only four batsmen have all of their test centuries in winning cause amongst the batsmen who have hit 5 or more test tons.

A test century always comes special in every batter’s career. Whenever a youngster picks up a bat they dream of scoring a test century. Not many have made it to the centurion’s list in this format. Scoring a century in a test demands grit, determination, and a great amount of focus to build an innings.

There have been batters with multiple test hundreds yet they could not secure a win for their teams. In a rare sense of achievement, only four batters have contributed with all of their test centuries coming in winning causes. In 146 years of Test cricket, only 4 have managed to do that amongst the batsmen who have hit 5 or more centuries in their careers.

Here’s the elite list of four batsmen whose all test centuries have come in winning cause (Minimum 5 centuries in career):

5. Ollie Pope – 5

England top-order batter Ollie Pope is considered the upcoming batting star in test cricket. Ollie Pope’s approach has been fruitful for England’s newly adopted strategy ‘Bazball’. Ollie Pope has smashed five test hundreds in his career so far and all of them have come in winning cause. Right-hand batter Ollie Pope has made his test debut in 2018 against India at the Lord’s. His first-ever test century came against South Africa at Gqeberha during England’s tour of South Africa in 2020.

4 – Darren Lehmann – 5

Former Australian middle-order batter Darren Lehmann has played only 27 test matches in his 6-year-long test career. Lehmann was Australia’s bench strength player in the longest format, yet he sealed the opportunity every time he got the opportunity. Lehmann in 27 tests and has scored 2 centuries against Bangladesh, 2 against Sri Lanka, and one against West Indies.

Lehmann’s 4 out of 5 centuries were 150+ scores. In 27 test matches, he scored 1798 runs at an average of 44.95 and 10 half-centuries. His all test centuries came in a winning cause for Australia.

3 – Warwick Armstrong – 6

Test cricket began in 1877 and two years later one of the Australian great Warwick Armstrong was born. Former All-rounder Warwick Armstrong has also made his name in the elite list of 4 players. Armstrong in his 50-test long career had smashed 6 centuries and all of them contributed to the team’s victory.

During his time, Test cricket was being played between England, Australia, and South Africa. Armstrong scored 4 test centuries against England while two came against South Africa. 

2 – Travis Head – 6

Australia’s World Test Championship 2023 final hero Travis Head is also on this list with 6 test centuries and all coming in winning cause. Head’s latest assault came against India in the WTC 2023 Final at The Oval. Known for his counter-attacking approach, Travis Head smashed 6 centuries in 41 tests, 4 of which were 150+ scores that gave Australia a chance to grip the game. Head’s 163 were crucial against India as well. In 41 tests, Head smashed 22 fifty-plus scores and scored 2857 runs in 67 innings.  

1 – Rohit Sharma – 11

Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s test career has been a roller coaster ride for him. Rohit could not consolidate his place in the longer format. It is just 3-4 years back he made a solid comeback in red-ball cricket. In the last 4 years, Rohit Sharma smashed 7 test centuries in 25 test matches.

In his all career so far, Rohit smashed 11 test centuries and his centuries assured Team India’s victory with his most recent one coming against West Indies in the first test at Roseau, Dominica. Rohit has now 44 international centuries to his name and 36 have come in a winning cause for India.
