8 England players to miss IPL 2024 playoffs

The IPL 2024 playoffs will begin on May 21 with the Qualifier 1.

England have named their provisionary squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan. This will mean that seven of the England players, who are currently part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, will miss out on the playoffs.

England are the defending champions of the competition, having won it in Australia in 2022.

The T20 World Cup 2024 will take place in the West Indies and the United States from June 1 to 29, 2024. The event will have a record 20 teams. For the first time, Canada, Uganda, and the United States (as co-hosts) have advanced.

Jofra Archer has been named in the England squad along with Chris Jordan, while Tom Hartley and Will Jacks also have been included in the England team by the ECB.

Archer has not played for England since a limited-overs tour of Bangladesh in March last year, when his long-standing right elbow problem – stress fractures in the joint – reappeared, resulting in another protracted sabbatical for the fast bowler.

But he has since regained fitness and played in pre-season matches for Sussex. He has also been named in the England squad for Pakistan T20Is which will precede the T20 World Cup.

Before the T20 World Cup, England will face Pakistan in a series of five T20Is, which will begin on May 22. This means several of the England players who are currently in India for the ongoing IPL 2024 will have to leave the IPL before the playoffs which begin on May 21.

“Selected players, currently playing in the Indian Premier League, will return in time for the series against Pakistan, which gets underway at Headingley on Wednesday 22 May 2024. The World Cup squad will fly to the Caribbean on 31 May ahead of England’s opening group match against Scotland at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, on Wednesday 4 June,” ECB stated.

This will mean Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, and Reece Topley will have to leave the IPL early and will not be available for the respective franchises in case they make it into the playoffs.

The playoffs of the IPL 2024 will be played on May 21, 22, and 24, with the final scheduled for May 26.
