(Courtesy : BCCI)
Abhishek Sharma has been key behind SRH’s success in IPL over last few days.
The IPL 2027 season is still months away, but reports of a possible major player move have already emerged. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) handed the captaincy to Ishan Kishan in IPL 2026 when Pat Cummins missed first half of the season.
According to a report by The Times of India, Abhishek Sharma was unhappy with the decision and now wants to leave the franchise ahead of IPL 2027.
Abhishek Sharma has been an important part of the SRH setup for several seasons. The Indian opener has been with the franchise since 2019 and became a regular opener in 2022, playing alongside Travis Head.

Abhishek reportedly had ambitions of captaining SRH. However, the franchise chose Ishan Kishan as a captaincy option, which did not go well with the Indian opener.
The report suggests that informal talks have taken place with Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings. Delhi Capitals are also among the possible destinations, partly because Abhishek’s mentor Yuvraj Singh is now part of their setup.
However, no deal has been finalised, and there is no official confirmation of a transfer.
SRH CEO K Shanmugam has rejected the reports, calling them “not true.” Abhishek has been part of the Sunrisers franchise since 2019. He became a regular opener in 2022, playing alongside Travis Head.
This means there is currently no official confirmation that Abhishek wants to leave SRH. The claims about his future have come from the report, while the franchise has denied them.
With Pat Cummins potentially unavailable for a major part of IPL 2027, the captaincy situation at SRH could remain an important talking point.
Ishan Kishan is expected to lead the side in his absence, while reports suggest that Abhishek Sharma could be looking for a team where he has a bigger leadership role.
Abhishek has played an important role in SRH’s batting setup since becoming a regular opener. His performances for the franchise also helped him earn an India call-up, and he is now one of the recognised names in T20 cricket.
