India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is not part of ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour.

Indian men’s cricket team chief selector Ajit Agarkar has revealed reason behind new T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav‘s exclusion from the ODI squad of Sri Lanka tour. India will tour Sri Lanka in July-August 2024 for three T20Is and as many ODIs.

A few days ago, BCCI announced two different line-ups for the upcoming away white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. The Indian selectors named Suryakumar as the new T20I skipper, whereas Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the ODI squad. The three-match T20I series will be played from July 27 to July 30 in Pallekele.

However, Suryakumar Yadav was not picked in the ODI squad, which raised many questions about his future in ODI cricket. It is to be noted that Yadav was also part of the Indian squad that went through to the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

No we haven’t discussed with Suryakumar: Ajit Agarkar

After performing brilliantly in the shortest format for the Indian cricket team, Suryakumar made his ODI debut for the national side against Sri Lanka in Colombo on July 18, 2021. At that time, many cricket pundits believed that Suryakumar would be the next big thing in Indian cricket in ODIs as well. However, Yadav has failed to replicate his T20I success in the ODIs.

In 37 ODI matches, the right-handed batter has scored only 773 runs at an average of 25.76. Suryakumar has scored only four half centuries till now. Ahead of Team India’s departure for the Sri Lanka tour, the chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav will not be part of the ODIs as of now.

Agarkar said as Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul had a great ODI World Cup 2023, and Rishabh Pant is also back. The Indian management will find it hard to fit Suryakumar into the middle-order in the ODIs.

“No we haven’t discussed with Suryakumar. Both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul had a stellar run in the ODI World Cup, and with Pant back in contention, they will find it hard to fit in SKY into the middle order in the fifty-over format,” Agarkar said during the press conference before Sri Lanka series.
