Andrew Flintoff is currently the coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team in The Hundred.

Former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is believed to be the front-runner to replace Matthew Mott as England’s limited-overs coach, according to a recent report in Sky Sports.

Mott, who guided England to the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 trophy, stepped down from his role on July 30 mid-way into his four-year contract following England’s failures to defend both their ODI and T20 crowns.

Last year, England had a disastrous campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023 in India, where they managed only three wins in nine games. This year, in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, they were knocked out in the semi-final by India. Despite reaching the semis, they performed disappointingly, losing to Australia, South Africa and India.

Rob Key had indicated a liking for Andrew Flintoff in the coaching role

Andrew Flintoff began his full-time coaching career not too long ago and the legendary all-rounder could soon find himself in the hot seat as the coach of England’s white-ball teams.

He is currently the head coach of the Northern Superchargers’ men’s side in The Hundred.

Last year he was invited by Rob Key, the managing director of the men’s England cricket team, to be part of the coaching set-up during the home Ashes. Since then, he’s had roles with the white-ball teams and has coached England Lions and Under-19s.

In March earlier this year, Rob Key had said that Flintoff is being seen as a future coach.

Key had told the Daily Telegraph. “He [Flintoff] will be a worthy candidate going forward. When that time comes and whoever is in this job, and it might be outside of my time, they would be stupid not to look at him.

“Flintoff is a leader like [Ben] Stokes. He is not going to need to learn leadership qualities.”

Marcus Trescothick, who is currently the interim coach after Mott’s departure, Kumar Sangakkara, and Jonathan Trott are other contenders for the role.
